Commercial Floor Coatings
What are Floor Coatings?
Floor coatings are used to protect concrete floors and hide minor imperfections in older floors. Most coatings are 100% aggregate-free epoxy coatings that are perfect for floors that are too rough for thin mil urethane coating but not damaged enough for a heavy duty resurfacer. The coating solution is applied at a heavy mil thickness and cures to an extremely durable and easy to maintain surface that is also impact, strength and abrasion resistance. Top coats and sealers such as Urethanes (link to page) are optional and can be applied depending on floor usage and requirements.
For environments where there are electronics and a lot of technology where static electricity would pose a problem, there are electrostatic dissipative (ESD) coating solutions. ESD solutions are designed to protect against the transfer of static electricity to sensitive components or in sensitive areas. The ESD coatings consist of multiple layers. A sealant is applied to the original floor creating a strong base. Then a conductive primer is applied to absorb and transport the current to the ground. Lastly, a dissipative topcoat is applied as the final finish.
Chemical resistant epoxies are used for secondary containment in environments where there is potential for high chemical or hazardous material exposure. This protective lining and coating system has the ability to contain high concentrations of acids and even some chlorinated solvents. Secondary containment solutions are designed to meet local, provincial and federal regulations. Some chemical resistant epoxies include fiberglass reinforcement, which eliminates problems with air pockets that are created when traditional reinforcement matting is used. This provides you with a superior solution.
A couple additional coatings that are available are water-based and solvent-based. Water-based coatings are two-component, low odour and high performance epoxy coatings that can be used as primers, base coats or topcoats. They offer good adhesion and abrasion resistance properties as well as moderate chemical resistance. Solvent-based coatings are durable, light reflective, multi-purpose coatings with excellent adhesion and protective qualities. They can withstand mild to aggressive acids, alkalies and aliphatic solvents and can be applied to concrete, metal, masonry and wood.
