Case Study: Domtar - New Westminster BC

Case Study: Domtar - New Westminster. BC

Domtar's building required a full tear-off of the existing roof system (approx. 1,500 square feet) with full replacement of the rotten deck followed by the installation of a new Fully Adhered 60mil EPDM roof system complete with tapered insulation. Access at ground levels was very restricted due to constant vehicular traffic in and out of the plant. During the length of the project, all lanes had to be made accessible during business hours. Roof access for CentiMark crews were through the manufacturing plant with an escort at all times.

The biggest challenge with this project was the safety of both Domtar employees and CentiMark crews. Directly below the rotted roof was a paper mixer that ran 24/7 and at no time could any foreign objects enter the mixer as it would effect the quality of the paper being produced. Once removal of the old roof system began, it became apparent that more of the interior structure was rotten including the exterior walls than first anticipated.

Domtar was updated daily on the progress CentiMark crews were making including the results of their findings as the project proceeded. Scaffolding was erected above and around the mixer for protection and for the safety of employees during the removal of the existing roof system and decking. Once on the roof, all crews were tied-off and in Full Fall Arrest. All exterior walls were replaced along with new structural beams and roof decking. The EPDM roof was installed complete with tapered insulation, all new 26 gauge metal flashings and wall cladding.

Domtar's expectations were met and exceeded with all components of the roof and walls replaced without any disruption to the plant's manufacturing process. The customer was very impressed with their final roofing product.
